A common misconception amongst golfers is that a golf net is meant to replace practice at a driving range or course. On the contrary, the golf net is meant to compliment going to the driving range. It is a quick and proven method to get more out of your practice sessions at the driving range and for use with other training aids that would be used at home.
A trip to the driving range is an almost irreplaceable part of practicing. Being able to see your ball flight is a large part of preparing for 18 holes. To those lucky enough to live next to a course this is a quick trip, but for most it is impractical. Being able to practice at home in the evenings is going to dramatically improve your effective practice time spent hitting rented buckets of golf balls at the range.
A golf practice net is meant for use at home in your free time in whatever space is available. Over the years golf nets have grown in popularity and proven themselves to a be an excellent addition to your practice routine. Being able to hit golf balls at home improves coordination and above all allows for repetition, a key to mastering your swing. A golf net also allows for practice using real golf balls with other training aids meant to improve a golfers swing.
Golfers today have a huge selection of products to help them practice at home when time is short so weekend sessions are that much more productive. Improvements in design have also grown golf nets in popularity. Initially golf nets were nothing more than a hanging bed sheet that innovative home owners hung to get some swings in at home in the evenings. Today there is a wide selection and the choices are almost endless. The largest innovation was using the classic tent and changing the material out to netting. Since then numerous innovations in material and manufacturing have created a plethora of choices.
When thinking about how to improve your game, considering a golf practice net to use with other training aids can improve your practice time and the effectiveness of that practice. The ability to hit real golf balls while practicing improves the feel compared to a foam or practice ball and the repetition of the swing will feel all the more natural when that Saturday trip to the driving range or golf course rolls around.
Repetition is probably the greatest form of practice for a golfer. Simply by spending 30 minutes a day hitting balls, a noticeable difference at the driving range is almost guaranteed. Also improved dexterity and driving distance from the motion and practice of swinging is an added result. A good stretching regime, see our Geek Golf article, combined with your swinging and hitting practice is scientifically proven to increase the balls distance.
Golf simulators have exploded in popularity over the past several years as cheaper computing and infrared sensors have made what once cost tens of thousands of dollars affordable to almost anyone with a television. Most of these indoor simulators include a net for catching a foam ball included with the kit. By upgrading the netting, the ability to use real golf balls will greatly improve the experience. The idea of a simulator is to be, as close to the real thing as possible and using a quality golf net will help.
When using a golf practice net at home the first criteria is space, not only for the net but also overhead space for the top and follow through of a swing. Another factor is the experience of the golfer. Golf balls can go in almost any direction. The golfer should be sure of his or her ability to hit the net. If there is any doubt, a full cage model might be ideal or use foam golf balls that can cause little damage.
Golf nets are here to stay. There are hundreds of customer testimonials online (such as Amazon.com) or simply asking your local PGA golf pro. Choosing the right one will greatly improve the experience and results as a golf net will obviously provide no benefit if it is not actually used.
In conclusion, a golf net should not be looked at as a replacement to actually hitting the range or a Saturday at a golf course. It is instead a tool to help improve a golfers game and used correctly can have excellent results.
