Our office in China is based in Dongguan China. It is a central manufacturing hub in China and an easy train ride to Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Guangzhou. Most people that live here are migrant workers. They live in dormitories and save their money so they can go home to buy an apartment and live with their families. We chose Dongguan for its “clustering” of manufacturing. Prices have gone up but there is still quite a lot of value in having so many specialized manufacturers in one place. Doing something like this would be extremely difficult in the US because of the great geographical distances between manufacturers. Rukket has done quite a lot of sourcing in Dalton, Georgia; but still it is nothing compared to the diversity of manufacturers and the businesses that support them located here.
Last year commodity prices were increasing for almost everything. This year a very obvious slow down is going on. A lot of factories are closed and there are fewer workers on the street. Check out this article about Nike and Adidas. This plant is located near one of our manufacturers.
Not to long ago we witnessed our first worker demonstration. Marching down the street in front of one of our net manufacturers, workers from a nearby factory marched with signs written on old pieces of cardboard. Not far behind were a dozen police on either side with billy clubs looking quite on edge. It was a rather rare site. Not sure what happened in the end as they just kept going down the road and out of sight.
