Realized the unbelievable value of your uneven yard and the limitless possibilities for practice it offers yet? Time to change up the chipping routine and start trying to hit off more difficult lies. Find that little hill where you are no longer standing on even ground and place your chipping target first where you are hitting up then down the hill.
Here are a few tips to help your swing on this uneven ground:
Downward Lie:
Keep your hands in front of the ball at address. Never behind the ball. Your hands should remain in front throughout the entire swing.
When chipping down hill you want to shift your weight to the left. This means focusing on rolling your feet left so the motion is focused more downwards and you will get more downwards movement towards the ball. This way you get a better impact and more spin on the ball.
Because you are standing on a hill your body will be angled more to the left. Focus on keeping your hands in front of the ball (this can not be stressed enough).
Keep your swing down. Stay low through impact to get better results, if you lift up you will most certainly top the golf ball.
Uphill Lie:
Don’t lean into the hill.
You’re not trying to scoop the ball; that is what it feels like you should be doing.
The slope is going to add some loft to your shot, so try taking a club down. For example use a sand wedge instead of a lob wedge.
Lean away from the chipping target.
Keep the ball a little forward in your stance. Keep it roughly between the heel of your left foot and the center of your stance.
Focus on keeping the shaft of your club leaning forward and finishing the swing low.
