Weapons for the Lacrosse Offense

The best offense is…a good offense! There’s no substitute for being fast, aggressive and precise when trying to punch through a tough defensive wall. Here are some things to keep in mind when game day comes and the competition seems bent on denying you what you came to do, to drop that rock in the cage!

  • Make the defenseman covering you concentrate on you and you alone. If he’s able to multi-task, that means you’re letting him, so keep moving around.

  • Never, repeat NEVER, pass the ball just to get rid of it, that’s lazy and a sign of timidity.

  • When scanning the field before an attack, notice the positioning of the defense. If they are drawn in tight, that’s not the time to attack. You and your teammates must draw them out in order to create lines of weakness to the goal.

  • Time your cut according to the ball carrier. If he isn’t seeing your cut, he won’t know you’re open for a pass. And this leads to the next fundamental…

  • Talk! Communication is paramount. The best teams are the loudest, most talkative teams.

  • If there’s a loose ball on the ground, instinctively go after it. Make it a point to win every 50/50 ball.

  • Try to time your shot so that there are at least one, preferably two men behind the goal in order to back up shots.

  • Here’s an obvious one but one that gets overlooked: never pass to a covered teammate

  • When riding a defensive player, don’t rush him, especially behind the goal. Instead, pressure him to make a pass, preferably in the direction in which you know there is offensive help.

  • Vary your cuts and make them unpredictable by faking left before going right and vice versa. This includes changing up your speed; altering your pace is an effective way of getting open.

  • Practicing stick skills with your non-dominant hand will make you a double threat.

  • Shoot for the pipes. Practicing with the Rukket Rip It! Lacrosse Rejector will hone your shooting skills and make you an indispensible precision scorer.

  • An effective attack-man understands the importance of field position when he doesn’t have the ball. If the ball carrier comes toward you, clear through. If he’s moving away from you, follow the ball.

  • When feeding to another player, don’t throw off the back foot. The pass will be too soft and susceptible to interception.

  • By forcing a clearing defenseman to the sideline, you’re using the field’s limitations to your advantage.

  • When you have possession of the ball, fake passes. It will keep your defender’s stick moving instead of checking yours.

  • Practice hard…the more you put in, the more you’ll get out!

If you perfect these tips in training and use them when it matters, you can be a potent attack and a force to be reckoned with.
