So what are the secrets, a professional driver, a Nike golf ball, and a rigorous practice schedule? They certainly may help, but these superficial accessories are worth it only if you know how to execute the perfect swing. Some of the pros at Golf.com share their suggestions for mastering the drive in order to increase distance--increase your speed! More speed means more distance, and there are many ways to achieve it.

Brian Mogg suggests three ways to increase the distance of your driver almost instantly:

  • Make sure that your stance is correct: spread your feet so that your base is wide and can support the twisting of your waist that a good drive requires.

  • Check your angles, because it’s important to hit the ball at an upward angle. An easy way to ensure that is to make sure the buttons at your collar, and your nose, are behind the ball.

  • When you are ready to swing, lead aggressively with your front hip. This increases your momentum and keeps your swing smooth, so that you can hit the ball with as much concentrated power as possible.

Brady Riggs knows that an over swing can interfere with the power of your drive. In case you don’t know what an over swing is, check if you’re swinging too far up on your backswing. If you are, then you have an over swing. Here’s how he suggests remedying one:

  • Start your downswing sooner!

  • During your backswing, when your hands are about chest high, start your downswing.

  • Don’t pause when you are at the right place to start your downswing, because then you will lose your momentum and your drive will be less powerful.

Laird Small tells us that balance is a key part of a powerful drive. He explains how to maintain the best balance for a drive:

  • Posture is important. Bend over slightly at your hip joints, with your bottom just behind your heels.

  • Check that it’s easier to tap your heels than it is your toes. If it is, your balance is correctly placed on the arch of your foot. If not, redistribute your weight until it is.

  • As you finish your swing, make sure your thighs are tight together so that your balance remains even.

As you can see, a powerful drive, built for speed and distance, can be perfected in minutes if not seconds. But if you don’t see an immediate improvement, don’t let yourself become discouraged. Now that you have the knowledge to send your ball flying to the green, all you need is some of that practice I mentioned earlier!
