Your Pinehurst Fashion Guide: US Open 2014

Are you going to the games? The U.S. Open is approaching fast, so if you’re one of the lucky few that gets to attend, you’re probably beginning to think about how to dress for the long walk-around. As the sport has grown, golf attire has been moving toward some more liberal trends, think of Rickie Fowler. But it get’s hot in North Carolina, so you’ll be sorry if you don’t take that into consideration when the mercury rises above 85 degrees.

One thing for sure is that both young and old are embracing tech fabrics, most utilizing all polyester or poly blends. The high temperature and humidity in the Southeast make breathability paramount, so all-cotton shirts, shorts and pants can leave you looking like you just took a dip in the drink by the ninth hole. Now the problem with all poly shirts is they tend to hang off you and that “moisture-wicking” attribute can turn into an odor problem. They also aren’t as conducive to movement; some suggest it can affect your swing. All said the best option might be just a half step back to the basics. A ploy blend that utilizes the advances in cotton production, namely Pima or mercerized cotton, may be your best bet. They’ll keep you cool AND looking good out there.

The comfort part is easy; your personal style may take a little more thought. Luckily, innovations in comfort wear don’t necessarily translate into techno fashion sense. There are some good options out there that combine ultimate comfort with classic or contemporary style. You don’t have to blindly follow fashion trends that keep trying to outdo each other, although it can be fun. If you don’t want to mimic Billy Horschel’s octopus pants, stick with some standard slacks with a toned down color, then branch out with a little louder shirt or blouse. One fail-proof color combination is always red & black, and it’s a great way to show support for Bubba Watson or any of the other UGA alumni playing this year (eight in all!).

If you’ve got to have the coolest pants out there, let a tame top define them. If you go buck wild on you’re whole getup, people may mistake you for a clown. Ladies have a little more leeway (and probably a lot more fashion sense), what with shorts, skirts, skorts, dresses, sleeves or sans. Whatever you do, please don’t show up in jeans.

As far as footwear goes, since you’re not going to be playing, you may want to leave the spikes at home. Loafers, athletic shoes or ballet flats (ladies only) are probably the best bet. If you’re not scared of sand and possibly wet grass, sandals are another option. And for the truly fearless women out there, wedge heels will make you stand out, non wedges will too, but not in a good way.

Don’t forget your straw hat, ball cap or visor! Even if you do, it won’t be hard to find any number of vendors eager to hook you up with anything you need, including sunglasses and sunscreen. Handbags and backpacks are not allowed, but feel free to bring a small bag, about the size of a fanny pack, or a transparent 12”x12”x12” tote. Go strut your stuff!
