Getting a little tired of good old regular stroke-play golf? Want to mix it up a little with your friends next time you hit the links? Here are some fun golf games that will liven up an outing and even help hone your skills!

Pickup Sticks: This is a two-person game where every time you lose a hole, you get to take a club from your opponent’s bag, or vice versa. The person who has lost a club can then win the club back when he or she loses a hole. Before the game begins, you can decide whether or not to give the putter immunity. A variation of the game does away with stroke handicaps in lieu of a club handicap where every two strokes is worth one club, which can also be won back during play. Pickup Sticks is a very strategic game where it pays to be familiar with your opponent’s strengths and weakness and also be knowledgeable of the layout of the course.
Wolf: This is a popular betting game for a foursome where the players rotate being the wolf for each hole. The wolf must choose his or her partner directly after that player tees off. For example, if the first player makes a bad drive, the wolf can wait for the next player. If they make a good drive and the wolf wants them as a partner, he must declare it before the third possibility tees off. The wolf can also choose to be a lone wolf after everyone tees off, which could win, or lose, the wolf triples the bet on the hole, which makes for a 3-on-1 scenario, hence the bigger pot. Otherwise, the team that has the lowest best ball score will win. Ties result in a wash.

Vegas: This team betting game can get pretty pricey depending on the stakes. Instead of combining the team score in a traditional sense, the two players’ numbers are paired, with the lower number coming first, so that if one player scores a 4, and the other player scores a 6, the team score for the hole is 46. The point difference between the teams is tracked throughout the round, with the payoff at the end of the game. As a safeguard, if a player enters the double-digits, their score is counted first, so if player A scores 6 and player B scores 10, the team score is 106, as opposed to 610. We suggest that average Joes play for nickels and dimes, since playing this game for dollars could break the bank. Fun Rule: “Flipping the Bird” is a rule you can play with where if a team gets a birdie on a hole, they can flip the opposing team’s score around making it higher!
Bingo, Bango, Bongo: This is a great game for groups with mixed handicaps, as it gives everyone a chance to score by simply being the first at something. A player scores a point for being the first on the green (Bingo), a point for being the closest to the pin after everyone is on the green (Bango), and a point for being the first to hole out (Bongo). Just like stroke play, the first to hole out tees off first on the next hole and once all the balls are in play, whoever is furthest from the hole shoots first. Bingo, Bango, Bongo can be played with 2, 3, or 4 players.
