Beginner Lacrosse Drills: Grow your game!

Here a few beginner lacrosse drills you can practice to become the next great player. Any Rukket Sports lacrosse product (4x4 net, 6x6 net, and 6x6 rejecter) all can help you become that future all-star lacrosse player!

Lacrosse Wall Ball Drills

• Beginners should practice lots and lots of wall ball. Why? It is probably the most effective way to improve beginner stick skills.

• Get your son or daughter to practice passing as well as catching with their non-dominant hand. Coaches will adore them if they can use both hands effectively.

Lacrosse Shooting Drills (Remember to run everything righty and lefty)

• Have your players - Run, dodge (past a defender) and shoot on the goal. Remember to practice righty and lefty shots.

• Run, catch a pass and shoot.

• Run, scoop up a ground ball and shoot.

• Run from around the back of goal and shoot.

• Run, fake shot and shoot.

• Add targets (i.e. Rukket 6x6 Lacrosse Rejector) in the net in order to practice shooting accuracy.

• Cutting Drills - "Cut" across the face of the goal (left to right or right to left). Start from 15-20 yards out, run diagonally across the face of the net and end up at the goal line extended on the other side of goal. Another person then will stand near/behind the goal line extended on the opposite side of the net (opposite where the player starts) and feed the player as they cut across goal. Player should be able to catch and shoot on the run.

• Practice quick stick shots close to the goal.

Lacrosse Passing Drills

• Basic passing and catching with a stationary partner - practice right and left hand passes and catches. This should be one of the first drills you practice.

• Two kids running down the field in parallel passing back and forth.

• Passing under pressure is a key drill for any level lacrosse player. One kid lightly applying pressure to a passer who must get off a clean pass.

• Triangle drill: Three kids in a triangle passing around - start with 10 righty passes and catches and then again lefty. You can make it harder by making the running in a circle while passing and catching.

Lacrosse Catching Drills

• Practice catching goalie clears. Someone will act as a goalie and you will have to break out left or right from the goal and catch a ball on the run.

• Practice catching "misguided" passes, like a pass that is just a bit too wide or high. This also will help to intercept opponent passes or catch errant passes from teammates.

Lacrosse Cradling Drills

• Practice with two hands while cradling and running down the field. Switch from left to right side on each whistle blow from a parent/coach.

• Up the toughness: Practice with only one hand while cradling and running down the field. Switch hands on each whistle blow from a parent/coach. Remember to lock your non-cradling arm in place to avoid any warding penalties.

• For each drill you can add light defensive pressure to learn how to protect the stick with your body.
