Recipe for a Masters Winner: Score low on 7,13, and 18!

Perusing the internet I came across a great question, what does it take to win the Masters? It really got me thinking about the recent history of winners of the coveted green jacket. Let's delve a bit more into the analysis.

Naturally these are just a few ideas and do not hold true to every Masters tournament. A quick look at the Official World Golf Rankings shows that 14 of the past winners all came from inside the top 20. Bubba Watson was 12th in the world when he won his green jacket at Augusta National.

Rankings are just a number relative to wins and losses typically, what about how the past champions have performed on the course. Mark Brodie from SI has a great piece about a formula for winning the Masters tournament. The formula he created is correct about 50% of the time when applied to past winners.

The lynch pin of the formula circles around three holes, #7, #13, and #18.

This is how the past five winners have played those three holes:

The winners just demolish No. 13.

There are far too many areas to analyze but combining world ranking and performance on these three holes gives a pretty good picture. Sure, someone can go out and play these three holes lights out, but the course still has 15 more ready to bring them down to Earth.
